Trajan Fountain

This was on the north side of the street. According to one inscription, it was built, by Tiberius Claudius Aristion, around 102-104 AD in the name of the Emperor Trajan. The altar inscription is on a piece of the cornege beside the fountain. The fountain had two-storied columns on three sides. Between the columns were statue niches. In the central niche was a statue of Trajan, twelve meters high, of which only the feet and base remain.  Some of the other sculptures that decorated the fountain are now in the Selçuk museum, including representations of Trajan’s family and a beautiful statue of Dionysus.  The pool of the fountain was surrounded on three sides by a two-storied colonnade, the columns in the lower tier in the so-called composite order, the upper ones Corinthian.  The colonnade has now been partially reassembled, although in truncated form ,so as to give one an idea of its general appearance.

Water entered the fountain through a pipe under the emperor's feet. The original height was 12 m, but was reduced when later repaired.
