The water's high salt and mineral content makes even non-swimmers float in the warm, briny fluid. And, being so far below sea level, the sun's dangerous rays are filtered out before they reach bathers on the beach. The Dead sea has long been an important industrial region for Jordan, which exports ample quantities of phosphates and minerals drawn from the area.
