Frederick Carl Walter, Sr.
1913 - 1996


Frederick Carl Walter was born on 28 Feb 1913 in Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne, Pennsylvania.   He was Baptized on 16 Mar 1913 at St. Nicholas Church, Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.1  His godparents were:  Fred and Philomena Walter.1   The family was living at 248 S. Washington Street when he was born.

In the 1920 census, Frederick was 6 years old.  The family was renting a house at 190 Park Ave, Wilkes-Barre.  Living at home were his parents, 9 siblings and grandmother, Elizabeth Schappert, 75 years old.  Frederick was attending school.

In the 1930 census, Frederick was 17 years old.  He was living with his father and 7 siblings at 97 Elizabeth Street, Wilkes-Barre.  He was working as an office boy at a newspaper.

Frederick was a volunteer scout master, with his 4 sons all cub scouts or boy scouts. He volunteered selling tickets St. Nicholas High School basketball games.

His occupation as a type setter, printer and proof reader spanned almost 50 years working for the weekly Sunday Independent Newspaper in Wilkes-Barre.

He lived almost his entire life at 97 Elizabeth St. in Wilkes-Barre.  He left Wilkes-Barre in 1989 when his wife needed hip replacement surgery which was performed at the Mayo Clinic, St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.  While there, Frederick required almost immediate surgery for almost total blockage of his coronary arteries.  While in the hospital, he fractured his hip which required more surgery.  After spending about 5 months in Rochester, at his daughter's house, he then moved to Long Island, New York, to live with his son Louis.

After Sophia died in 1993, Frederick's health deteriorated further.  He then traveled to Lompoc, California in 1995, so his daughter could help with his care.  He finally entered Santa Maria (California) Care Center on 17 June 1996.

He died on 14 Jul 1996 in Santa Maria, Santa Barbara, California.

Frederick C. Walter, 83, formerly of Elizabeth Street, Wilkes-Barre, died Sunday (July 14, 1996) in Lompoc, Calif.

He was born Feb. 28, 1913, in Wilkes-Barre, son of the late Jacob H. and Matilda Schappert Walter, and was a member of St. Nicholas Church, Wilkes-Barre.

Prior to retiring, Mr. Walter was employed as a printer for 50 years by the former Sunday Independent newspaper.

His wife, the former Sophia Tanski, died Dec. 21, 1993.

Surviving are a daughter, Mary Ann Koonrad, Lompoc, Calif.; sons, Frederick Jr., Mount Sinai, NY; John, Tucson, AZ; Robert, Langhorne, PA; Louis, Farmingville, NY; 10 grandchildren; sister, Kathleen Brady, Wilkes-Barre.

Funeral will be held Thursday (18 July 1996) at 9 from McLaughlin Funeral Service, 142 S. Washington St., Wilkes-Barre, with Funeral Mass at 9:30 in St. Nicholas Church.  Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.  Friends may call Wednesday 7 to 9.
