Our South America adventure lasted 23
days. We left Tucson on March 25, 2001 to fly to Dallas. Our plane had mechanical problems, so American Airlines gave us meal
vouchers until a new plane arrived. We
left 4 hours late for our flight to Lima. (First of three transportation
breakdowns.) We arrived in Lima about 4 a.m. We did get a couple of
hours sleep before we had breakfast and our first briefing and tour in Lima.
Our Peru tour guide was Jose Medina. Our
guide for Lima was Maribella.
Our hotel was in the Miraflores district which is the upper
class section of town. On our stay
in Lima we walked to
the Pacific Ocean and visited an underground mall on the cliff overlooking
the water. We also walked to
Kennedy Square and visited some of the local stores. The tours we took and
sites we saw are listed on the left under the pictures list.
The route we took after the
arrival in Lima was first to the Amazon River from the town of
Iquitos. After the Amazon adventure we flew back to Lima
then a train to Cusco and Machu Picchu. From Cusco we flew
to Quito, Ecuador and then another flight to the Galapagos
Islands. Flew back to Quito for the trip to the Andean
Highlands by bus and eventually flew back to the U.S. from
Quito.
